Always willing to rise to the restoration challenge at Redline, when we were approached by a client to help prepare his original 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 to enter into this year’s Salon Privé Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elegance, we were of course delighted to assist.
The only caveat we faced; cars are usually prepared over many months for such a distinguished event and for this one we would have just three weeks. However just getting a car successfully entered at this prestigious event is a major achievement and we were determined to make it happen.
Now in its 13th year, Salon Privé is held at Blenheim Palace with a sensational line-up of cars entered.
One of the top Concours d’Elégance events worldwide, Salon Privé comprises a super luxurious garden party set out over three days, where the finest collection of supercars, hypercars and classic cars are presented.
So the race was on to get this beautiful classic car ready to enter the ‘Wind in your Hair’ category for open top classic vehicles at Salon Privé 2018 within just three weeks.
After carefully reviewing and documenting the car we began work, completely dismantling the car down to assess any corrosion and repair bodywork to the highest standards, paying particular attention to make absolutely perfect all of the shut lines and panel gaps to the boot, bonnet and doors for an immaculate body line finish.
The seats were removed so we could complete fitting a re-trimmed interior, a major milestone to give the car an authentic show worthy finished appearance. And the cars mechanicals were given an overhaul including the chassis and suspension systems with parts painstakingly removed then rebuilt or replaced.
It was a little late in the day that a fault was found with the car’s engine, but with our experienced engine build team and workshop facilities the 7.0lt Ford 427 engine was rebuilt to peak performance ahead of the show.
The Cobra’s body was returned to an original colour, Rangoon Red, a popular Ford Mustang colour in the 1960’s, delivering striking good looks ready for show day.
Having completed meticulous checks over all of the work, delivering authentic finishes and workmanship, the car was ready to load on the transporter and head for Blenheim Palace.
It was a proud moment for everyone involved in this very special project to see the finished car displayed on the lawns at Blenheim Palace.
